March 31, 2014, MIAMI – Last week local South Florida Sports Business professionals, Darren Heitner – Sports Attorney and FORBES Sports Business Contributor – and Natalie Mikolich – Sports Publicist at NPM | PR – put on the first sports business networking event in South Florida called #SBWeek Miami.
Bringing out sports business professionals from the entire South Florida community, #SBWeek Miami was held at Fado Irish Pub in Mary Brickell Village on March 27th and also celebrated the release of Darren Heitner’s new book How to Play the Game – What Every Sports Attorney Needs to Know. Attendees at #SBWeek Miami included both industry veterans and those just starting out in sports business including executives from the Miami-Dade Sports Commission, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, Homestead Miami Speedway, local sports reporters and sports management students and professors with the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University along with many more.
“#SBWeek Miami was an overwhelming success for everyone in attendance,” said Sports Attorney, Darren Heitner. “It was a brilliant display of Miami's ever-expanding sports business industry with executives from the public and private sector, including representatives of all major South Florida-based professional sports franchises. The response has been entirely positive, and people are clamoring for future sports business events in the South Florida community."
Building on the success of #SBNight 2013 where sports business networking events were held in 18 cities on one night, this year over 30 events were held worldwide throughout the week of March 24th including Miami. Sponsoring #SBWeek Miami was Trace BlackWater of Vancouver making their U.S. debut as a new life-enriching wellness brand for their 77+ trace minerals and powerful antioxidant black water along with premium performance and lifestyle apparel brand RYU. In addition to this, Coral Gables Trust also made a donation to fund #SBWeek Miami with Prince Tennis and the Miami Marlins providing raffle items to giveaway.
“It was incredible to see the turnout for our first sports business networking event in South Florida and receive such tremendous support from a variety of business professionals, sports teams and prominent organizations in our local community,” added Sports Publicist, Natalie Mikolich of NPM | PR. “I am honored to have been a part of putting on #SBWeek Miami in order to bring together our growing community of South Florida sports industry executives along with aspiring sports business professionals.”
Benefiting UNICEF’s Sport for Development program, there was a $5 registration fee for everyone who attended an #SBWeek event worldwide with over $6,000 raised in the 30 plus events that took place.
“The goal of #SBWeek was to help members of the sports industry connect with their peers and expand their professional networks,” commented Russell Scibetti, Founding Editor of TheBusinessOfSports.com and Founder of #SBWeek. “This originally started as small, one-off events in New York and Philadelphia, and has grown into more cities every year culminating with #SBWeek 2014 where we had events in more than 30 cities around the world.”
Darren Heitner’s new book How to Play the Game – What Every Sports Attorney Needs to Know is just being released and is already quoted by top sports industry executives as a new go-to source for anyone interested in getting into the field of sports law. Discussing the laws that govern the sports industry today, How to Play the Game also includes real-life case studies involving recognized professional and college sports figures along with a foreword by super-agent (and inspiration behind the movie Jerry McGuire) Leigh Steinberg.
