Release Date: October 12th, 2017
Client: Boston University - Save BU Wrestling
After it was announced in the Spring of 2013 that the legendary Men’s Wrestling program was going to be eliminated from Boston University Athletics at the end of the 2013-2014 season following a new $3 million sponsorship by New Balance for the addition of a Men’s Lacrosse team, the Save BU Wrestling Campaign was launched by a group of BU Wrestling Alumni, the current BU Wrestling team members (including their Head Coach) and other supporters to fight to reverse the decision made by the Boston University Athletic Administration in order to keep their program at the University.
Consisting of social media, traditional media and other grassroots efforts, those heading up the Save BU Wrestling program sought out npm | pr to put in place and implement a public relations campaign in order to secure new in-depth articles and television news stories to generate widespread public exposure about the controversy that was occurring with elimination of the wrestling program and put pressure on the Boston University Athletic Administration to reverse their decision.
As a result of our aggressive media relations efforts, npm | pr secured coverage with top local, national and industry media outlets including FOX College Sports, Inside of Higher Education, CBS Boston, USA Wrestling, The Boston Globe and USA Today Sports.
Although the Boston University Athletic Administration did not reverse their decision, the Save BU Wrestling campaigners fought until the very end and received tremendous widespread support.
